This practice oriented course introduces students to viewing, playing, and making video games following a lineage of contemporary experimental + avant-garde game makers. As a companion to learning fundamentals of game engines, and game programming ,students will critically play and read about the history of transmedia storytelling through experimental gamemaking. Students will have the opportunity to produce various games, including a comprehensive final project to learn the foundations of game design and production. In this course, not only will the students reveal pitfalls and bottlenecks of modern game production, but they will also discover constructively innovative ways of changing and challenging the video games industry. No previous experience with games or programming necessary.

Throughout the course students will develop three projects, each project will explore different aspects of game design and production, including: systems and rule design, level design, game balance, polemics, writing, narrative, adaptation, digital assets, programming, and other aesthetic and pragmatic aspects of game design.
