Statistics is the methodology for “collecting, analyzing, interpreting and drawing conclusions (or inferences) from data”. Putting it in other words, statistics is the methodology that researchers have developed for interpreting and drawing conclusions from collected data.

There are two major types of statistics. The branch of statistics concerned about summarization and description of data is called descriptive statistics and the branch of statistics concerned with using sample data to make an inference about a population of data is called inferential statistics. We will study both in this class.
Some of the questions we will consider are:
• What data should be collected, and how?
• What are some effective ways of summarizing data?
• What methods of inference should you use, and how accurate and reliable are these methods?
